Ben and Kate gave us the confidence to tackle some of the biggest jobs on this build, and the community they have built has been invaluable in those scary moments!
Mike Wye:
Supplier of lime plasters, mortars, natural paints and insulation. Excellent advice alongside the products — genuinely helpful if you’re learning as you go. One of the most trusted names in traditional building materials in the UK. Phone before ordering if you are unsure or need advice!
Brouns & Co.:
Our linseed oil paint of choice for the timber windows. Swedish formula, good coverage and genuinely protective rather than just decorative. This one was a bit of an experiment for us, and we were nervous as painting windows is a huge time drain – we didn’t want to do it again! But they should now outlast any modern paint finish.
Back to Earth:
Not only a very competitive supplier of sustainable building materials, but the best place for expert guidance we have come across. When it came to insulation, these guys took the time to answer our questions and help us find the best solutions for some of our stranger wonky-house problems.
The only pan you need.
Ok – this is really pricey. But whilst we’ve had it for over 10 years now – for many months we have ONLY had this pan. And a camping saucepan (which doesn’t count). It’s amazing.
Rolling in dough.
Random fact – we buy our flour in 16kg chunks. Feel free to judge us for the amount of bread we make and eat. But I now love nothing more than a giant bag of flour in the kitchen!
Who’s washing up?
This feels silly – but these tea towels actually dry things. They remind me of my parents house and are officially the ‘drying up’ tea towel of choice. Who said ‘adulting’ isn’t fun?
Haines Collection:
Surplus designer interiors fabric sold at a fraction of retail. Leftover stock from high-end designers and manufacturers — the kind of fabric you’d normally need a trade account to access. Stock drops every Monday at 6:30pm and sells fast.
Merchant & Mills:
A beautifully edited collection of natural fabrics — linen, canvas, cotton. Not deadstock but considered and quality-led. Their haberdashery is equally good. The kind of shop that makes you want to make things. We’ve had curtain fabric and supplies from here time and time again.
The New Craft House:
East London studio and online shop stocking designer deadstock fabric. A more curated selection than most — interesting prints and textures that feel genuinely original rather than generic remnants. They also offer workshops!
